Policy
St. Norbert College classifies its employees using various categories and definitions, as described below.Fair Labor Standards Act Exemption Classifications
Exempt employees
Exempt employees are paid on a salary basis and are not eligible for overtime pay. These employees provide professional services or have managerial responsibilities.
Nonexempt employees
Nonexempt employees are paid on an hourly basis and are eligible for overtime pay when they work more than 40 hours during a workweek. St. Norbert’s nonexempt staff provide clerical, housekeeping and food services, plus technical support and other forms of assistance that support educational and administrative programs.
College Roles
Academic staff
Academic staff provide administrative, managerial and/or instructional support to specific college programs or departments, generally coinciding with an academic calendar.
College officers
College officers include the president and various vice presidents, who are responsible for the operation and management of the college, including these divisions: Academic Affairs, Business & Finance, College Advancement, Enrollment Management & Communications, Information Technology Services and Mission & Student Affairs.
Faculty
Faculty members are responsible for the college curriculum, the matter and methods of instruction, research and those aspects of student life relating to the educational process. They are also responsible for the college’s degree requirements and for recommending to the president and Board of Trustees the granting of degrees achieved.
Independent contractors
Independent contractors are self-employed individuals who offer their professional services to the public on a contract or per diem fee basis. They are not considered college employees and are not eligible for college benefits.
Employment Status
Full-time employees
Full-time employees regularly work 30 or more hours per week and are eligible for college benefits. A 30-hour position is considered a .75 full-time equivalent (FTE) position, while a 40-hour position is considered a 1.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) position. Benefits such as vacation, holiday and paid time off are pro-rated for employees who have less than 1.0 FTE appointments.
Part-time employees
Part-time employees – those working less than a .75 FTE position on a regular, ongoing basis – generally work fewer than 30 hours per week and may not work more than 1,500 hours per year. While part-time employees are not eligible for most benefits, the college contributes to statutorily required benefits, such as Social Security and Unemployment Compensation. Part-time employees can also make unmatched contributions to the college’s retirement plan.
Temporary employees
Temporary employees provide temporary support and project support. They are not scheduled on a regular, ongoing basis. Temporary employees may not work more than 1,200 hours per work year, although they may be scheduled for up to full-time work within the 1,200-hour limitation. While temporary employees are not eligible for most employee benefits, the college contributes to statutorily required benefits, such as Social Security and Unemployment Compensation.
