Time Off & Leaves: Volunteer Time Off
Applies to: All Benefit Eligible Staff
Purpose: To support the Norbertine tradition that calls us to respond to the needs of our global and local communities, and the Norbertine value of stabilitas loci, a deep commitment to the local community. St. Norbert College encourages employees to become involved in their communities, lending their voluntary support to programs that positively impact the quality of life within these communities.

Policy
All benefit eligible staff of St. Norbert College are eligible to participate in this program. Employees are encouraged to volunteer with fellow SNC colleagues and do not need to be from the same department. The employee must be in good standing and must provide reasonable notice to their supervisor for approvalProcedure
Employees must enter absence/time off the same as Vacation/PTO in Workday and have supervisor approval at least two weeks in advance.
Benefit eligible employees can volunteer up to 8 hours per calendar year with a 501(c)(3) non profit or equivalent. Time must be taken in a minimum of a two-hour block. The hours of volunteer time will not be eligible to be paid at any overtime rate and also will not count toward a weekly determination of whether other hours are to be paid at overtime. If the hours are not used during the year, they do not carry over to the next year.
Examples of appropriate uses for VTO :
- Building a house for Habitat for Humanity
- Volunteering at a food bank
- Cleaning up a beach, park or trail
- Becoming a Big Brother/Big Sister
- Volunteering at a local hospital
- Volunteering at a school
- Serving on a nonprofit board

Examples of inappropriate uses for VTO:
- Taking a ski vacation and charitably giving ski lessons
- Coaching your child’s basketball team
- Attending your child’s PTA conference
- Judging a beauty pageant
- Serving as a scout leader
