Green Knights Sweep the Board This Weekend
All four winter sports triumphed in an outstanding weekend of play on campus that swept the Midwest Conference (MWC) board.
Both basketball teams advanced to NCAA tournament play. Both hockey teams will compete next weekend for berths in their respective NCAA tournaments.
The Green Knights sweep came over a busy two-day period that saw the playoff events in all sports hosted at St. Norbert. Winning seasons by men’s and women’s basketball, and women’s and men’s hockey, ensured the home-field advantage.
Men’s Basketball
St. Norbert College held the nation’s top-scoring team scoreless in the final 3 minutes 38 seconds to top Grinnell College 99-86 in the championship game of the Midwest Conference Tournament at Schuldes Sports Center.
The No. 5-ranked Green Knights (24-1) were tied with the Pioneers 86-86 with 3:38 to go before closing the game on a 13-0 run. Grinnell, which ended its season 19-6, entered the game averaging 118.0 points per game.
St. Norbert advances to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the fourth time in five years, and the sixth time in school history. The 24 wins also mark the most in the 91-season history of the program.
The men’s perfect 18-0 record in conference play is an MWC first.
Men's basketball will play Ohio Wesleyan University at Illinois Wesleyan University in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Tournament on Friday at 5 p.m.
Women’s Basketball
St. Norbert College held Monmouth College to two points in the final 6 minutes 8 seconds of their final MWC game and claimed the championship with a 69-60 win on Connie Tilley Court at Schuldes Sports Center.
The Green Knights (21-4) earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament, their 11th appearance in school history.
Saturday’s win was the 609th for Coach Connie Tilley, who became the 13th coach in NCAA Division III women's basketball history to reach 600 career wins in a Jan. 22 win over Beloit College.
Women's basketball advances to face Carthage College in the NCAA Division III Central Regional Tournament on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Lady Reds' Tarble Arena in Kenosha.
Women’s Hockey
St. Norbert had little issue winning its first-round game in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Slaats Cup Playoffs, topping Marian University 7-0 at Resch Olympic Pavilion.
The Green Knights (18-6-2) advance to Friday's Slaats Cup Four semifinal game at Lake Forest College, where they will play College of St. Scholastica at 7 p.m.
Men’s Hockey
St. Norbert got a five-point game from Cullen Bradshaw ’15 and cruised to a 6-0 win over Lake Forest College in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Harris Cup semifinal game at Cornerstone Community Center.
The Green Knights (24-3-1), ranked No. 1 in the USCHO.com and D3hockey.com polls, will face College of St. Scholastica at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at the Cornerstone for the Harris Cup championship.
Track & Field finishes indoor season strong
While crowds at Schuldes, Cornerstone and the Resch Pavilion in De Pere saw winter sports laurels won, Green Knight track and field athletes were finishing their indoor season in fine form at Cornell College. The Midwest Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships saw five title-winning performances for the Knights, along with second-place team finishes for both men’s and women’s teams.
