The autumn colors are wonderful every year but this October they simply took our breath away. We have photos and more to catch up you up on news from the fall semester on campus.

In Case You Missed It/Fall(ing) in Love Again

The stories just keep coming at St. Norbert College. Here’s a roundup of just a few of the items we’ve shared via social media, websites or in other publications since our last issue.

Fall(ing) in love again
It happens reliably every 12 months, but still the beauty of campus in the fall never gets old. The loveliness of the colors this year simply took our breath away, and John Devroy (Communications) was able to capture it in this video we shared with the board of trustees at its October meeting. (Board meetings are via videoconference at this time, but all the same, we wanted to bring a little De Pere into the trustees’ virtual encounters.)

Green Knights wear their masks
Brian and Carol BruessWe’re still able to enjoy life here on campus because we’re willing to wear our masks! President Brian Bruess ’90 and Carol (Sessler) ’90 showed us how, in this tongue-in-cheek glimpse of presidential home life. It’s just as well they finally figured out proper mask etiquette, since the rest of the campus joins them in following strict pandemic protocols. It’s a careful move that brought on-campus cases per week down to the single digits, allowing us to continue the semester in-person.

What’s it like pursuing your college education during a pandemic? Brianne DeLain ’23 and Gavin Sorensen ’20 wrote recently about beginning and ending their college careers, respectively, during the spring lockdown. DeLain and Sorensen are two of those students whose college careers, at the very beginning or the very end, were interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic. Their experiences, they say, made them appreciate St. Norbert all the more. This piece first ran in our latest Parents of St. Norbert e-newsletter.

Also from Parents of St. Norbert, by the way, this interview with housekeeper Chris Wilbert. “The way I look at it,” she says, “my students are my customers. I can’t cater to all their needs, but if I can be a little light in the darkness and can help out, I do.”

She cares deeply about helping students from underrepresented groups navigate the world of higher education. She is a former Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Scholar, which is a program meant to increase graduate degree awards for students from underrepresented groups who have demonstrated strong academic potential.

Laura Krull (Sociology) is analyzing virtual teaching techniques during the pandemic. She spoke to a local TV channel about what’s working and what isn’t.

Nic Greenlaw ’21 found his internship with Bellin Health Titletown Sports Medicine & Orthopedics has helped his understanding of running, and it has helped his understanding of his work in his physics major, too.

And Chef Dan Froelich launched our new Behind the Arch alumni series with “At Home With Chef Dan,” in which, ably assisted by his wife, Mary Ann, he demonstrated how to make his much-loved and oft-requested chili.
