Classical studies

Exploring the past to understand the future

Our culture, government, education system and even popular forms of entertainment are shaped by the classical world. The languages and literature of ancient Greece and Rome lie at the heart of modern life. By acquainting yourself with cultures from the past, you’ll better understand everyday life in the modern world. Classical, medieval and Renaissance studies at St. Norbert College provide you with the tools for mining the treasures of ancient thinkers — and prepare you to apply this wisdom to the challenges of today.

Academic paths within the minor

Completing four core courses and three electives from our classical studies curriculum will earn you a minor in this area. You can also design an individualized major in classical studies with help from your academic advisor. Join other classical studies students and compete for recognition on the National Latin Exam each year.

Elevate your classical studies education

The Center for Norbertine Studies acts as a repository for scholarly texts and research, housing a number of rare books and manuscripts. As a classical studies student, you’ll have access to these materials to use in your studies and research. Some of our students also choose to complete research projects. For example, as part of a recent Undergraduate Research Forum project, one of our students produced the first English translation of one of St. Norbert’s 12th-century sermons!

Want to experience Greek temples or Italian masterpieces firsthand? Our study abroad programs will take you to some of the most beautiful spots in Europe, where you’ll have the opportunity to take courses in Greek and Roman history and civilization, art, anthropology or philosophy.

  • I like the beauties of life as well, and I think Latin is that. It’s discovery of what is known as a ‘dead language,’ and I think that’s super cool.
