In the characters of great literature, you meet people who can show you the world from a new point of view. What’s more, the study of English literature equips you to think critically and reflect before you draw your own conclusions and express your theories in writing, academically and creatively. Skills you learn as an English major, including reading, writing and critical thinking, will be valuable to you in virtually any profession you pursue.
As a student in SNC’s English studies program, you can choose from several degree options:
Several scholarships and awards recognize the accomplishments of SNC English majors. As you pursue an English degree at SNC, you’ll create a senior-year portfolio that captures your undergraduate writing experience. This portfolio helps you stand out from other aspiring creative professionals, enabling you to shine a spotlight on what you do well. It will be an asset in your job search, or with applications to graduate school.
The English honor society, Sigma Tau Delta, fosters social and intellectual interaction with literary students and faculty. As a member, you’ll have the opportunity to attend or present at the annual Sigma Tau Delta Undergraduate Convention.
You can seek work in SNC’s Writing Center or contribute to the St. Norbert Times student-run newspaper to gain invaluable professional experience, or find an internship off-campus.
If creative writing is your passion, you’ll be able to submit to Graphos — our student-run literary journal — and you’ll have the opportunity to work with SNC’s writer-in-residence.
Many of our English majors have landed internship roles with employers such as the Brown County United Way, the College of Menominee Nation, Milwaukee Writers Workshop and WFRV Channel 5.
