Chemistry

Find chemical solutions to tough problems

Did high school chemistry leave you fascinated with the periodic table? St. Norbert College will help you take your love of the elements to the next level and decode chemical questions like: What makes mosquito repellents effective? How close are we to finding a cure for cancer? Our rigorous, lab-intensive chemistry curriculum will sharpen your powers of observation, foster collaboration and exploration, and cultivate the curiosity that leads to discovery.

Chemistry is known as a central science, meaning that it bridges gaps among life, physical and applied sciences. At SNC, you’ll choose from chemistry coursework in agriculture, medicine, environmental science, engineering and even geology. Industrial products of chemistry (ranging from medicines to building materials) have transformed these domains with scientific advances and technology. In other words, chemistry can improve lives, grow businesses and change the world.

Academic paths within the chemistry major

At SNC, all chemistry majors study general chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical and inorganic chemistry. You may concentrate your Bachelor of Science degree in either general chemistry or biochemistry. Our degree paths adhere to the American Chemical Society Division of Education standards.

If you’re majoring in biology, physics or geology, consider adding a minor in chemistry to better understand your primary scientific discipline. Want to share your love of chemistry with high school students? SNC offers a minor in chemistry education that can lead to your secondary teaching certification. Looking to save some money? SNC offers need- and merit-based scholarships specifically for chemistry majors.

Elevate your chemistry education

Want to take spectroscopy in the United Kingdom? How about studying reactor design in Australia? SNC’s study abroad programs will enrich your college experience. When our chemistry majors apply for internships, they get hired — by employers such as Pace Analytical Services and Nature’s Way. If you’re interested in research, you won’t have to wait for graduate school! SNC students work with professors on research topics as diverse as riparian ecosystems, dopamine transporters and antimicrobial properties in cleaning wipes. In addition, you’ll be encouraged to contribute to chemistry research through your senior thesis.

  • Because of the small class sizes at St. Norbert (some of mine had as few as six students), you develop close relationships with your professors. ... I had three who were kind enough to write letters of recommendation for grad school, which was a big factor in getting accepted.
