Engineering physics

The smartest path to an engineering career

An engineering physics major at St. Norbert College prepares students to apply physics and engineering solutions to real-world problems requiring a combination of intellectual creativity and technological capability. Your journey will begin in your first year with hands-on, project-based courses in robotics and electronic sensors, before progressing to advanced coursework in mechanics, electronics, automated systems design, applied thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and quantum mechanics – topics that underpin all branches of engineering. SNC is a liberal arts college so you’ll also have the opportunity to explore far and wide across other areas of academic interest and acquire a diverse knowledge base and skill set that will serve you well in any career.

Recent engineering graduates have gone on to pursue doctoral degrees in chemical and biomolecular engineering at Notre Dame, master’s degrees in mechanical engineering and biomechanics at UW-Madison, electrical engineering at Marquette and aerospace engineering at the University of Florida. Others have gone directly into the workforce with positions in software engineering at Northwestern Mutual and Epic Systems, and in HVAC engineering at Tweet Garot.

Academics paths in the engineering physics major

The Bachelor of Science degree with an engineering physics major at SNC is unique in that it allows students to lay the foundation for a wide variety of engineering fields, including mechanical, electrical, chemical, robotics and biomedical engineering. With an engineering physics degree, you'll be prepared to move into any of these fields, and you can choose a career path as your interests develop.

Elevate your engineering physics education

At SNC, you’ll have the opportunity to conduct collaborative research alongside your professors in the Gehl-Mulva Science Center’s state-of-the-art labs. The skills you'll acquire and the personal relationships you’ll build with our faculty can open doors to internship positions sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy — and at some of the most prestigious laboratories and graduate schools in the country.

  • The robust knowledge base a liberal arts education provides allows me to be able to better present my research to the world. It gave me the skills to hold conversations with people unfamiliar with my research and maybe the topic in general.

  • The biggest differentiator of a liberal arts education, I think, is that you can interconnect ideas between different disciplines easily and understand where others are coming from.
