Pre-veterinary

Get on the path to veterinary school

Do you pick up extra hours volunteering at a local barn or humane society? Are you the primary pet-sitter in your neighborhood? A degree in veterinary science may be the perfect fit! As a pre-veterinary student at St. Norbert College, you’ll fine-tune your analytical and problem-solving skills through our core curriculum while building your broad scientific knowledge and technical skills through our rigorous science courses. The skills you gain through our pre-veterinary track will benefit you in applying for veterinary school and in your future career.

Academic paths within the program

Imagine trying to navigate the complexity of veterinary school applications on your own. Here’s good news: You’ll be paired with a pre-veterinary advisor at SNC so you won’t have to. Your advisor will help ensure that you’re meeting all of the requirements for admission to veterinary school.

While no specific major is required for veterinary-school admission, students are expected to have a strong background in biology and chemistry, so many SNC students major in biology, chemistry or natural science.

Veterinary schools typically require applicants to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) as part of the admission process. The American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges provides an admission-requirement directory of U.S., Canadian and international veterinary medical schools that details the admission-requirements and evaluation criteria for each school.

Elevate your pre-veterinary education

Our small class sizes and low student-to-faculty ratio provide you with ample opportunity to do research in our state-of-the-art biology lab. Gain diverse lab experience by studying abroad. Want to learn about coastal ecology in Tanzania, conduct research in Ecuador or study invertebrates in New Zealand? Consider choosing a program or location that gets you closer to your goal of becoming a veterinarian. As a pre-vet student at SNC, your study-abroad experiences will give you an edge in the competitive landscape of veterinary-school admission.

As a pre-veterinary student at SNC, you may be eligible for the William Thiel Scholarship for students pursuing careers in medicine or the natural sciences.

  • SNC hosts lots of informational talks, panels and speakers that opened my eyes and gave me more information about what I’d be experiencing in different medical professions and schools. Highlighting guests in a variety of professions is especially beneficial for students who are still deciding, or don’t know much about the different areas of health care.
